GOOD BYE TO GATO BARBIERI, SAX OF THE LAST TANGO

Leonardo "Gato" Barbieri, tremendous Argentinean saxophonist known amongst other things for composing the music of the film “Last Tango in Paris”, died in New York at 83 years of age. The musician’s wife shared the news, explaining that the cause of death was Pneumonia. During his long career, Barbieri registered 35 albums, plus other fifteen or so in collaborations with other musicians. It was actually Bertolucci’s film interpreted by Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider to give him worldwide fame and to make him win a Grammy. “My music is not Jazz. Actually, I play jazz but in a different way” he said last year to the Argentinean newspaper La Nacion. Barbieri, born in Rosario, was nicknamed “Gato” in the 50s because of the way he went around the clubs of Buenos Aires for his shows.
